Calculate Gradient From Two Levels

Convert two spot levels and a distance into the basic gradient information needed for drainage, landscape, access and early site calculations.

Built for a fast architecture workflow

  • Start and end level inputs
  • Horizontal distance input
  • Level difference (delta)
  • Gradient percentage
  • Slope angle in degrees

How to use it in practice

If a level changes from 100.000 m to 99.400 m over 12 m, the difference is -0.600 m and the gradient is -5.0%, indicating a fall toward the second point.

How to use Calculate Gradient From Two Levels

  1. 1

Enter the start level and end level in the same unit.

  2. 2

Enter the horizontal distance between the two points.

  3. 3

Calculate to get the level difference, percentage gradient and angle.

  4. 4

Use the sign of the result to understand whether the second point rises or falls relative to the first.

Common questions

What does a negative gradient mean?

It means the end level is lower than the start level using the order in which you entered them.

Can I use millimetres for levels?

Use consistent units for the start level, end level and distance relationship. The provided interface is intended around metre-based levels and distance.

Is this the same as slope ratio?

The result shows percentage and angle. You can use the separate slope converter when you also want a 1:n ratio.
